MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (February 15, 2016) – Growing Power’s 3rd Annual Good Food Revolution 5K Walk/Run will raise funds to combat urban food deserts in the heart of Milwaukee on Saturday, May 7, 2016.
Registration begins at 8am. Warm-up and celebrity appearances begin at 8:45am. Will Allen will be there to greet participants and start the race.
The event serves as a community celebration and Growing Power fundraiser in partnership with Westlawn Gardens and The Housing Authority. The walk/run was born out of work CEO and Founder, Will Allen, has been doing for the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign, which is working to prevent childhood obesity by helping parents and children make healthy choices. In the last decade childhood obesity has tripled in the United States, especially in areas where communities lack access to healthy and affordable food. The 5K will take place in one of Milwaukee’s largest food deserts, with the racecourse running between Growing Power’s headquarters and Westlawn Gardens on West Silver Spring Drive.
“The mission and vision of the Growing Power 5K Walk/Run is to show, in a concrete way, what we need to do as an organization, community and city, in order to end poverty and provide opportunities for all individuals to live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle”, Allen stated. “This can and will be done by developing a new food system; one that produces good local food that helps to develop the healthy people and communities that we all want.”
Meteorologist, Mark Baden of WISN Channel 12 News will be hosting the event as Growing Power’s celebrity MC. As seen in past years, Mayor Barrett hopes to be speaking as well as participating as a runner. Growing Power is currently working with the Milwaukee Buck’s to secure a player to sign autographs. In addition, Bango the Buck and the Buck’s Beats Drumline have been requested to get the celebration started off on the right foot. Tours of Growing Power’s urban farm will be available, free of charge, to participants, after the race.
By participating, sponsors, runners and walkers will be showing their support for the community food system that Growing Power has been building for over the last 20 years; a community system that is desperately needed in this area of Milwaukee. Tickets can be purchased online at www.eventbrite.com or www.growingpower.org or by calling Growing Power at 414-527-1546.
