Clara Shaffer Park, located at 8900 S. Green Bay Avenue, was established in 2015 to serve the residents of South Chicago. This 15-acre site is designed to engage residents in both food and fitness activities. The park has walking trails, along with an urban farm and community garden managed by Growing Power, Inc.
Community Garden Kick-off!
Saturday, April 16, 10am-4pm
Do you want to grow your own food? Come garden a plot at the
Community Garden in Shaffer Park! $25 gets you a 10 foot by 10
foot plot for the entire growing season. Plot distribution starts on
April 16th and runs through the end of May.
A Rose Never Smelled So Sweet! Garden Clean-up and
Saturday, May 14, 1pm-4pm
We will be planting rose bushes along the fence of the farm, doing
general site beautification and plantings, as well as cleaning-up
liter around the park. Come meet neighbors and the Growing
Power staff as we ready the site for the summer.
Monday through Saturday, May 23-28th, 9am-4pm
Stop by the farm any day this week to help the Growing Power team,
and your fellow community gardeners build the South Chicago Farm.

Hoop-House and Garden Bed Building Workshop
Saturday, May 28th, 9am-4pm
Workshop participants will learn how to build and plant growing
beds and how to construct a hoop-house for year-round growing.
Workshop fee is $25 for community garden members and neighbors
living in South Chicago. Pre-registration is required at
The Growing Power team, with the help of our friends and
neighbors, will install an urban orchard at the farm. Come out and
hep plant fruit trees and berry plants!

Have a question about gardening? See a pest that you don’t know
how to handle? Growing Power will have farmers on site willing to
help you trouble shoot your gardening woes if you need assistance.

Yoga and Stretching in the Park
Thursdays July 8th, 15th, 22 & 29th.
We are all about good food and fitness at Shaffer Park. During your
lunch break, come stretch with the Growing Power Youth Corps in
the park. We’ll be doing basic yoga stretches, relaxing, and enjoying
time together in the park.
Community Dinner, Sponsored by Barilla
Wednesday, September 28th
Growing Power will be hosting a community dinner for Community
Gardeners and neighbors at the farm. Come meet our staff, tour
the farm, and share a delicious meal together. Seats are limited
and will be ticketed closer to the date.

We will put the community garden to bed for the season. Come
clean-up your garden plot and ready the site for its winter slumber.
