In 2002, Growing Power significantly expanded its aquaculture operation.  These large pools can now grow Tilapia weighing several pounds.  The aquaculture system is also used for irrigating plants - this is also known as aquaponics.  The system is extensive, covering an entire green house.

While on tour at Growing Power, you will also be able to see a smaller demonstration for raising Tilapia at a very low cost.  The system is simple.  Each system consists of multiple  barrels.  One contains fish, another rocks.  The rocks act as an organic filtering media.  A simple aerator is all that is needed to circulate the water through the barrels.

Tilapia are fast growing.  They are a quality protein source.

Children can observe the fish and see them up close.

Refuse water from the fish is also used for hydroponics: that is, plants that can be grown without soil, just water.  This technology is also known as aquaponics.  Note that the seedlings in this picture are only getting their nutrients from fish water.
