Jackson Park Urban Farm Workshops

 

Join us and learn how to grow in the city.  The Jackson Park Urban Farm and Community Allotment Garden is a partnership program with the Chicago Park District.

Directions & Parking:  The urban farm is located at the intersection of S. Cornell Drive & E. Marquette Drive, Chicago, IL 60649.  Please park at the lot located on the North-East corner of 63rd Street and Cornell Drive.  Then walk South on Cornell.  While you are walking South on Cornell you will pass tennis courts, a baseball diamond, and the golf course.  At the last hole on the golf course before you reach Marquette Drive, turn East.  The garden is approximately 100 feet in from Cornell Drive.  Look for the fence surrounding the garden.   

 

Dinner and a Workshop Series

Come out and learn how to harvest over 50 varieties of vegetables, herbs, and fruit. Attendees will tour the garden, assist in the weekly harvest and prepare a meal together on site! We will enjoy salads, veggie kabobs, and homemade ice cream!

Build a Bed: Gardening 101

Thursday, July 23rd

5:30-6:30 pm (meal to follow)

Cost: $10.00

 

Learn the basics of raised bed construction, followed by basic seed sowing, transplanting, maintenance and harvesting of a veggie garden that you could construct in a 4’x8’space at home! We will focus on how to grow braising greens and salad gardens (lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, onions, basil, beets and carrots, etc.) and Kales, Swiss Chard, Collards and Southern Greens.

 

Attendees will plant a bed together, learn how to care and harvest the bed and share a salad together! Great beginning garden workshop or refresher for folks learning how to grow intensively.

Vermicomposting 101 – Build a family worm farm!

Thursday, August 20th

5:30-6:30 pm (meal to follow)

Cost: $15.00 (includes worms, bucket for composting and materials)

 

Come out and learn how to build and care for your own worm farm! You will learn how to manage a small household bin, year-round and also a larger garden scale model. This is a great way to manage your kitchen scraps and build your backyard garden! We will cover the basics of anaerobic composting, perfect for city dwellers, how to feed, harvest and use the worm castings, we will also answer questions for those who have tried vermicomposting in the past and need a refresher!

 

Bring your own 10-20 gallon plastic bin to the workshop to leave with a worm farm; a limited number will be available for purchase

 

Garden Fixings - Added Value from the garden

Cost: $10.00

 

Learn how to make vinegar and infused oils with herbs, salsa and art from the bounty of the garden! This is an all ages-family activity.
