In February 2002, Growing Power opened a Chicago-based operation
in order to manage the resource development and training staff necessary for
emerging community food centers and urban farm projects throughout Chicago-land. These
properties will be transformed into a thriving micro-enterprise, providing local
food security and income for project participants.
In the past six months, several
improvements have been made to the Milwaukee Community Food Center. These
include remodeling the food distribution facility and expanding its capacity to
assemble 1000 food-baskets per month. Final restoration of the fifth
greenhouse was completed in March 2002 and a new irrigation, heating / cooling
system was installed. Further improvements are envisioned. Further
funds are needed for a remodeled classroom, bathroom facilities, and a more
energy efficient heat source.
