Community Food Centers are local places where people can learn sustainable practices to grow, process, market and distribute food.  Growing Power's Milwaukee-based Community Food Center has been established for several years and features a wide variety of active demonstrations, including aquaculture, vermiculture, large-scale composting, etc.  Growing Power provides hands-on training or guided, educational tours at the Milwaukee-based Community Food Center.   The training that occurs at the Milwaukee center provides the seed for Growing Power's collaborative projects.

In February 2002, Growing Power opened a Chicago-based operation in order to manage the resource development and training staff necessary for emerging community food centers and urban farm projects throughout Chicago-land.  These properties will be transformed into a thriving micro-enterprise, providing local food security and income for project participants.

In the past six months, several improvements have been made to the Milwaukee Community Food Center.  These include remodeling the food distribution facility and expanding its capacity to assemble 1000 food-baskets per month.  Final restoration of the fifth greenhouse was completed in March 2002 and a new irrigation, heating / cooling system was installed.  Further improvements are envisioned.  Further funds are needed for a remodeled classroom, bathroom facilities, and a more energy efficient heat source.

Check out our training programs for more information or contact us if you are interested in taking a tour.  See map for directions.
